A British officer and his Chinese wife defy convention, shocking two empires. This is the remarkable story of Amy 'Amoi' Bird, lady of Sans Souci, an unlikely pioneer, who forged a life of resilience and strength in Barrie. The Barrie Historical Archive presents an original documentary film, 'Amoi'. In Barrie's long and fascinating history, one unique story stands out. It began in China with a forbidden marriage. In 1859, British officer Shearman Bird risked everything when he wed Amoi Chun, a Chinese woman. From war torn China to rural England, they searched for a safe haven to raise their children and found that place in Barrie. A family tragedy changed everything, and Amoi became the rock of her family and a beloved Barrie citizen. Traces of this remarkable time can still be seen in 'Sans Souci, the delightful home that architect Shearman built for his family.
